The project is located in Warwick Junction, a major communication hub in the city of Durban, South Africa, coinciding with a large market that occupies several buildings and a large part of the streets and pavements in the area. Illegal trading abounds underneath the now disused infrastructure; elevated highways that have been abandoned and colonised by street traders.
The area does not have the necessary facilities to deal with this unregulated trade, and insecurity spreads through the area after dark. Many of the traders live miles away from the city. From these needs arose the idea of creating a large structure to respond to the market's problems, providing solutions in stages and over time.
