How would it feel to experience distant and/or imaginary realities in physical space?

Is it possible to experience loci that are somewhat unreachable or even non(yet)existent?
How could these intangible locations be translated and rebuilt into atmospheric spaces, perceptible by the senses through immediate experience?

This immersive experience brings closer remote whereabouts and yet-to-discover loci using light, sound and reflections to render ambiances in space. The user -or traveler-, is able to directly feel and experience these phenomenal realities that used to remain in an intangible realm, now embodied in a multi-sensory environment.

<img width="4962" height="3508" width_o="4962" height_o="3508" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4b93e7c0c6222e6aa818cf9a57d532b7a5409b5a0ed38fb20881d0ae4f5ec8b8/atmospheric-spaces_illustration.jpg" data-mid="227944197" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4b93e7c0c6222e6aa818cf9a57d532b7a5409b5a0ed38fb20881d0ae4f5ec8b8/atmospheric-spaces_illustration.jpg" />

	A vessel is created, a contained space where different ambient elements can be controlled and adjusted, allowing different atmospheres to be rendered inside it.&nbsp;

The vessel, aimed to contain the space where the atmospheres are recreated, is able to replicate a range of different ambiances, acting as a&nbsp;portal&nbsp;that links the actual location where it is placed, with the&nbsp;rendered destination. Built as a soft enclosure, the&nbsp;vessel&nbsp;presents various entryways to its inside, leading each one of those to a different experience; as the light pieces of fabric on the outside are drawn, the&nbsp;traveller&nbsp;accesses a distant reality, leaving behind their bodily location and entering one of the many&nbsp;atmospheric spaces.

	This concept proposes a platform for creating architectural tiles that capture the atmosphere of real places. Photographs are used as input to extract color information, which is combined with weather data from the time and location the image was taken.

The collected data is translated into color patterns and surface relief, forming tiles that express environmental qualities rather than literal representations. Light, temperature, and spatial conditions are abstracted into material depth and texture, allowing each tile to hold the character of a specific moment.

The tiles are produced using additively fabricated mineral composites through 2.5D or 3D printing. The result is a series of tactile architectural surfaces suitable for private and public spaces, where environmental data becomes a physical and atmospheric material.

	Reassembly Frames is an ongoing series of visual tools that explore how images can be transformed through perceptual reduction, fragmentation, and recomposition. Instead of aiming for faithful representation, the series investigates how minimal or partial visual information can still evoke coherence, atmosphere, or a sense of place.

Each frame operates by breaking source images into discrete components and reorganising them through specific compositional logics. These processes may involve spatial subdivision, color redistribution, layering, or structural distortion. The resulting images retain traces of the original scene, yet shift away from recognisable depiction toward perceptual suggestion.

The series examines how perception operates when information is incomplete. Rather than reconstructing a precise image, viewers assemble meaning from gradients, rhythms, and spatial relations. This approach aligns with a broader research interest in low-definition environments, where suggestion replaces representation and cognitive load is reduced through the careful selection of perceptual cues.

Reassembly Frames functions as an open and extensible framework. Each variant introduces a different strategy for transforming images, forming a growing toolkit for reassembling visual material into reduced, atmospheric, or abstracted compositions.

	Tessellation Frame

Spatial subdivision and recursive recomposition

The Tessellation Frame fragments an image into a grid of smaller units and reassembles them into nested or repeated structures. Portions of the image are extracted, shifted, and reinserted into the composition, creating recursive frames that echo spatial feedback systems.

Through this process, the image becomes a layered field of partial representations. Edges, gradients, and silhouettes emerge as the primary perceptual cues, while recognisable detail gradually dissolves. Instead of a single stable depiction, the viewer encounters a composition built from overlapping fragments and spatial echoes.

This frame explores how subdivision, repetition, and spatial displacement can preserve atmospheric qualities while removing explicit semantic content.

	Histogram Frame

Color distribution preserved, structure reassembled

The Histogram Frame transforms an image by reorganising its pixels while preserving the overall color distribution. Instead of altering the palette, the frame redistributes the image’s internal structure according to perceptual rules derived from luminance fields, blur patterns, or sorted color values.

Through this process, the semantic structure of the original scene is largely removed, while its chromatic and atmospheric qualities remain intact. The resulting images appear familiar in tone and mood, yet lack clear objects or identifiable forms.

This frame treats the image as a collection of perceptual signals rather than a representation of objects. By preserving the histogram while altering spatial relationships, it produces compositions that maintain visual coherence without relying on recognisable content. The tool investigates how color distribution, spatial frequency, and structural abstraction shape perception when visual information is reduced.Access the functional Histogram Frame online tool here

	The Reduced Perceptual Cues (RPC) Card Deck is a conceptual and design tool developed to explore how sensory experiences can be constructed from minimal and abstracted inputs.

Rather than addressing architecture through walls, materials, or forms, the deck shifts focus toward atmospheric composition—working with light, sound, airflow, temperature, and reflection as the raw matter of spatial experience.

Each card invites designers, artists, and researchers to consider perception itself as the medium of construction.
Reduced Perceptual Cues（RPC）

	The RPC Card Deck emerged from the study of Reduced Perceptual Cues, a framework that examines how spaces can evoke complex sensations through limited sensory information.

By abstracting visual, aural, tactile, olfative and gustative stimuli into discrete yet combinable elements, the deck helps articulate what often remains intangible—the threshold between suggestion and perception.

The cards do not prescribe fixed outcomes.

Instead, they operate as a prompt system, a way to think through atmosphere and sensory structure.

Each composition becomes an experiment in how perception can be tuned, how attention can be guided, and how meaning emerges from reduction rather than saturation.

The deck was first introduced in a series of workshops where participants used it to translate memories, sensations, and site-specific experiences into multisensory spatial compositions.

By combining cards on a design board, participants could visualize the relationships between cues—light interacting with mist, sound blending with movement, or temperature modulating presence.

The process revealed how minimal perceptual information can still evoke recognition, emotion, and spatial coherence.

It also demonstrated how collaboration and interpretation play a role in constructing low-definition environments, where meaning emerges collectively through sensory abstraction.

The RPC Card Deck is part of an ongoing research project on Reduced Perceptual Cues (RPCs) and low-definition spatial design, situated within the Informational Atmospheric Toolbox framework.

It functions as both a pedagogical and methodological tool, bridging design research, human perception, and ambient computation.

Within this framework, the deck supports:

The study of how perceptual cues can be abstracted, combined, and transferred across different environments.The development of systematic methods for crafting mediated spaces that operate between physical and informational layers.The exploration of affordance-based interaction, where users intuitively engage with sensory feedback without explicit instructions.

This approach connects to broader discussions in Human–Building Interaction (HBI), ambient computing, and media architecture, contributing a new vocabulary for designing environments that communicate through subtle sensory dialogue.

&nbsp; &nbsp;The RPC Card Deck is available for download for designers, artists, and researchers interested in experimenting with perception-driven spatial composition.
It is being released as an open resource to encourage adaptation, remixing, and new applications across different disciplines—from architectural education to interactive media design.+ download hereRPCカードデッキは、知覚を起点とした空間構成の実験に関心を持つデザイナー、アーティスト、研究者のために公開されています。

	A project that explores the use of minimal inputs to synthesise experiential episodes within the context of built environments. In this specific iteration, various audio and visual elements serve to render the experience of riding the JR Yamanote line around Tokyo.

This piece features only two elements: sound and light. Visitors will be seated in a dark space and handed a pair of headphones equipped with a head tracker. When the experience commences, a rotating pattern on a ring of lights corresponds with the head movements of the visitor which are in turn synchronised with a collage of interweaving binaural recordings. The visitor will be able to control the temporal qualities of the recordings in addition to the moving shadows cast on the surrounding environment with a few simple movements of the head.

Project by Carlos García Fernández and Ismael Rasa
Keio Media Design, Embodied Media - Keio University

	The installation utilizes a combination of sensors, lighting, and audio hardware to create an immersive, interactive experience. A head-tracking sensor (Bluetooth Nx Head Tracker) detects the visitor’s movements, which in turn modulates both the lighting and soundscape in real time.A circular array of LED lights, controlled by an Arduino microcontroller, generates shifting patterns of illumination and shadow, reinforcing the perception of movement and space. High-quality binaural headphones deliver spatialized sound, immersing participants in a layered auditory experience of the JR Yamanote Line. The synchronised combination between these hardware components enables a seamless interaction between the visitor’s motion, dynamic lighting, and evolving soundscape.

The installation relies on Arduino, Pure Data, Max MSP, and NxOSC to create a dynamic interplay between light and sound, responding to user movement in real time. Head-tracking data is transmitted via NxOSC to Pure Data, which then distributes this data to both Arduino and Max MSP, ensuring synchronized audiovisual interaction.
Pure Data uses the comport external (a Pure Data external for serial communication) to send data to Arduino, which controls a circular array of lights. The system dynamically adjusts brightness and rotation speed based on visitor movement, generating shifting shadows that reinforce the sensation of motion and spatial immersion.
Simultaneously, Max MSP processes and spatializes the binaural audio, manipulating playback speed and directionality in response to head movements. This allows the layered sound collage—composed of field recordings from the JR Yamanote Line—to evolve in real time, shaping a responsive and immersive listening experience.

	Epoch is an interactive installation that explores how space, time, and the self coexist within the reality–virtuality continuum. Inside a small enclosed room, visitors encounter layered audiovisual representations of their own recent past. A 360-degree camera captures the interior of the space, and the images are recursively projected onto the surrounding walls with different time delays. At the same time, sounds produced in the room are recorded and replayed through granular synthesis, creating fragmented echoes of previous actions.&nbsp;

Within this closed feedback system, visitors are confronted with multiple temporal versions of themselves. Past and present actions overlap, producing a shifting perceptual environment where the boundaries between the real and the virtual become unstable.&nbsp;

The installation invites participants to interact with these layered traces, turning the room into a space where the self is continuously re-encountered through delayed representations.

	Entanglement of Space, Time, and the Self

Our existence is intrinsically entangled with space, time, and the living and non-living entities around us. Every action leaves traces in the environments we inhabit, regardless of whether we consciously act upon them.

Epoch draws attention to these entanglements by allowing visitors to intra-act with images grounded in their immediate surroundings, yet temporally displaced. As delayed projections accumulate, the distinctions between present experience and recorded traces begin to blur, challenging the stability of spatial and temporal perception.

Interaction with Temporal Traces

Visitors typically begin by testing the relationship between their movements and the delayed projections. Observations showed behaviors such as synchronized gestures, playful performances, or attempts to communicate with earlier versions of themselves.&nbsp;

These actions create a form of dialogue across time, where the present self interacts with traces of its own recent past. The installation thus becomes a space for exploratory interaction, where perception, memory, and bodily presence are continuously renegotiated.

&nbsp;Temporal Architecture
The installation operates through a minimal closed-loop audiovisual system. The captured video stream is split into multiple segments and projected back into the room with different delays, embedding earlier moments inside later ones.&nbsp;

Audio follows a similar logic: short recordings are replayed through granular synthesis, producing discontinuous echoes that circulate through the space.

Through this recursive structure, time becomes a spatial material. The room does not simulate another environment; instead, it reconfigures its own recent past, forming a layered architecture made of temporal fragments

	As an object of introspection and creator of virtual environments (reflected realities that exist but do not take actual space), the mirror and its reflections have been the main inspirations for this project.

	spatial reflections, outer reflexions

Kaleidoscopes are able to create spatial arrangements that completely defy the laws that normally dictate our real spaces; up is down, down is front and back is everywhere. Gravity and weight do not longer affect this reality, where the elements float and repeat themselves in infinite loops, creating geometric ever-changing configurations.&nbsp;

self reflections, inner reflexions

The kaleidoscopic collages do not offer just spatial reflections, but also the viewer’s own image, mixed and fused with their context. This new perspective of self, result of an endless iteration of one’s own perspective, dismantles one’s own perception and identity, fusing it with the space that we occupy as active viewers. The traveller then merges with their surroundings in a fractal collage where the boundary between body and space blurs, creating a more intimate experience with the surrounding ambience.

	Hidden satellites from Thuringia keep reflecting themselves in an infinite loop, creating a kaleidoscopic collage.

The piece consist of three differentiated elements: the legs, the main volume, and the upper kaleidoscope. The legs, 80cm tall, support a volume divided into four different chambers; each one, covered in mirrors, presents a different view/interpretation of various locations -satellites- in Thuringia. Every chamber consist of a 30cm cube, and is accessible through an aperture than can be opened from every face of the volume. The separation between chambers is made with two-sided mirrors, creating different effects whenever a different door is open; some elements and configurations are just visible when the installation is used by more than one visitor.

	Black balloons are floating weightlessly in the room. Their movements resemble a dance, a choreography: lightweight, yet threatening. What influences their movements? What does control them?

The balloons are controlled by data and the visitor is right in the middle of a sea of data. Data governs our everyday life. And data also unveils the condition of this world. Be it climate data, location data, or – like in this case – data about animal extinction.

The report of the United Nations︎, published in July 2019, which adresses the topic of animal extinction and the accompanying decline in biodiversity paints a severe picture of the destruction of species diversity. More than 1 million out of the 8 million animal and plant species living on earth will be threatened by extinction withing the next years. This is more than ever before in the history of mankind. It's the 6th mass extinction.

	As ungraspable as the numbers are the global relations which lead to such a development. This installation aims at making visible abstract data and its interconnections with the help of data physicalization. Compared to data visualization, data physicalization overcomes the limitations of two-dimensionality on paper or the screen by shifting the focus to the physical three-dimensional space. The installation invites its visitors to interact with it, to experience and to explore it.

	The installation consists of different parts, which are interdependent of each other and work together to form a whole. The main element of the installation is a platform, on which black balloons are mounted. The platform symbolizes the total of the animal world with all of its species. We have chosen animal data from the Living Planet Index︎, then selected certain animals and normalized the data set. In the end, the selected animals depict a curated representation of 16 animals which are mapped to the 16 balloons.

The platform features an engraved grid of x- and y-coordinates with numbers and letters. The grid matches one balloon to one animal. You can check the grid position of the balloon and read about the animal on the poster next to he platform.The platform features an engraved grid of x- and y-coordinates with numbers and letters. The installation is not just a static work to look at, but you can interact with it. Next to the platform stands a black box which you can enter. Once inside the box, you hear audio files from newscasts from the 1970s to the 2010s featuring important events about the environment, the economy, science or progress in general. By entering the black box, the visitor becomes the switch for the installation and starts it with his or her presence inside the box: the balloons start moving and change their position according to data of animal decline throughout the years.

	The whole construction consists of several sensors, modules, microcontrollers and a single-board computer that communicate with each other. The heart of the construction are Arduino Nanos, a Raspberry Pi and a wifi-module (ESP8266). These microcontrollers communicate over a wireless LAN and a bus topology.

The Raspberry Pi sends the animal extinction data to the ESP8266, in the first place. The ESP8266 sends the data to specific Arduino Nanos. Two animal extinction data lists are stored in one Arduino. One data list is represented by one balloon. The Raspberry Pi has the task to sense the presence of a person who enters the black box, plays music and sends information to the ESP8266. The Raspberry creates a webpage and changes data if a person enters the black box. The webpage shows the index of the animal extinction data list that has to be presented by the balloons.

The ESP8266 fetches the index from the webpage and sends it to every Arduino, so they can activate the motors and change the level of the balloons according to the value they have stored in the lists. The values are the amount of how many of this specific animal still lived in a specific year.

	"The Garden of Earthly Delights" is a VR experience that allows a close sight of the famous painting "The Garden of Earthly Delights", by Hieronymus Bosch, and to experience the rich and surrealistic world inside it. The experience plays with the sounds and the graphics, recreating two different scenes: the first one, a simple exhibition room with triptych painting, that deploys showing its inside when the player gets closer, and the second scene (and the surrealistic one), that tries to transport the player to the inside of the piece.
